How to Install Entry Door Hardware

• The "backset" is the distance from the door's edge to the center of the handle.
• 2 3/8" is fairly standard for this distance, but 2 3/4" is also commonly used.
• Most door handle holes are 2 1/8", while most deadbolt holes are 1 1/2".
• It's important to know these measurements in order to match new hardware.

1. Loosen and remove the screws holding the two halves of the handle together.
2. Separate the two halves (they should separate easily).
3. Loosen the two screws holding the latch and remove it.
4. Remove the deadbolt by loosening the thumb-turn from the keyed cylinder.
5. Remove the deadbolt latch in the same manner as the door handle latch.
6. If the project involves installing a new door which has no holes, use the template which comes with the new hardware to drill a hole for the new lockset/hardware.

1. First, install the new latch at the edge of the door and secure it with screws.
2. Next, install the deadbolt latch the same way.
3. Place the outside handle into position, making sure the thumb latch is inserted into the latch mechanism.
4. On the inside of the door, align the mounting plate and start the two screws, which affix it to the outside handle.
5. Attach the inside knob to the mounting plate and secure with screws.
6. Check the operation of the latch to make sure it operates smoothly.
7. If applicable, pre-drill a pilot hole for the bottom of the latch where indicated.
8. Secure it into place with the screw provided.
9. Install the two halves of the deadbolt in a similar manner and secure with screws.
